Autumn holidays 2026: Six Swiss outings with a rain plan

Technology, spaceflight, communication, tropical worlds, fossils and food: six concrete destinations with current opening hours and public transport notes.

The 2026 autumn holidays in Switzerland do not require a fair-weather plan. What matters is a destination that holds up completely in the rain and gains something extra when the sky clears. These six outings cover German-speaking Switzerland, Ticino and French-speaking Switzerland, and suit families, couples and solo travellers depending on the offering.

The details were checked on the official websites for autumn 2026. Events, visitor levels and construction work can change; a final look the evening before is still worthwhile.

1. Technorama Winterthur: test natural phenomena yourself

Ideal for: families with school-age children, teenagers and curious adults

Rain suitability: very high; the outdoor park is optional

Time needed: half a day to a full day

Public transport: recommended; parking spaces are limited

The Swiss Science Center Technorama is open daily from 10am to 5pm. The outdoor park stays open until the end of October 2026 and can be added during a dry spell. No compulsory time slot is specified for the indoor area. On holiday days an early arrival is still worth it, so that enough time remains for the experiment stations.

2. Verkehrshaus Lucerne: an autumn date for aviation and space

Ideal for: families, technology fans and mixed generations

Rain suitability: high; some demonstrations take place outdoors

Time needed: a full day

Public transport: train, bus or boat to Lucerne Verkehrshaus

The Air & Space Days take place from 2 to 4 October 2026. The programme covers aviation and space topics, demonstrations and, on the Saturday, an appearance by Swiss astronaut Claude Nicollier. The programme items are included in the regular museum admission. Until 24 October the museum is open from 10am to 6pm; the planetarium and the cinema follow separate schedules and may require additional tickets.

3. Museum of Communication Bern: currently with a construction notice

Ideal for: schoolchildren, adults and groups with differing interests

Rain suitability: very high

Time needed: two to three hours

Public transport: Helvetiaplatz; check the connection before setting off

The interactive museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm, and stays closed on Mondays. Construction work at Helvetiaplatz continues until mid-October. Tram lines 7 and 8 are partly replaced by replacement buses; line 6 is interrupted between Bern station and Egghölzli. The museum therefore explicitly recommends travelling by public transport and checking the latest connections.

4. Papiliorama Kerzers: a tropical world with a visitor counter

Ideal for: families, nature fans and all age groups

Rain suitability: high; the domes are covered

Time needed: two to three hours

Public transport: Bahnhof Kerzers Papiliorama, around 80 metres from the entrance

Until the clocks change, summer opening hours of 9am to 6pm apply, with last admission at 5.15pm. From 25 October the Papiliorama opens from 9am to 5pm. The visitor counter on the website is useful on holiday days: if more than 1,000 guests are already shown, the operator points to possible waiting times and a less pleasant visit. Light clothing under an autumn jacket helps with the switch into the warm, humid tropical climate.

5. Fossil Museum Monte San Giorgio: Ticino's earth history

Ideal for: fossil fans, families and culturally minded adults

Rain suitability: very high

Time needed: about two hours

Public transport: via Mendrisio and bus to Meride; check the timetable

The museum in Meride displays finds from the UNESCO World Heritage site Monte San Giorgio and is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 9am to 5pm. It stays closed on Mondays. Virtual offerings are included in admission. The separately bookable "Dragons Alive" experience is aimed, according to the museum, at people aged ten and over. That makes the museum a destination in its own right on a rainy day, not merely a substitute for a hike.

6. Alimentarium Vevey: a concrete tip from French-speaking Switzerland

Ideal for: families, food lovers and anyone who wants to understand nutrition better

Rain suitability: very high

Time needed: one and a half to two hours

Public transport: bus 201 or 202; alternatively around 15 minutes on foot from Vevey station

The Alimentarium combines food history, science and everyday life. In October it is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm; it stays closed on Mondays. A reservation is required for workshops and individual activities. The museum quotes a family price of 35 francs for two adults with children up to 15 years. The walk from the station runs along the lake; in heavy rain the bus is the more practical choice.

Check before you set off

  • Opening hours, closing days and any maintenance closures
  • Reservations, extra programmes and separate tickets
  • current public transport connections and construction sites
  • age rules and suitability for your own group
  • waiting times and visitor-level displays
  • food and cloakrooms on site
  • outdoor areas that stay closed in the rain

A good rain plan works even when it stays wet all day. Anyone who sorts out the time needed, the journey and any extra offerings in advance avoids the most common disappointments, especially during the holidays – and can treat a dry hour as a bonus.
