Spanish holiday island plans strategic realignment
Ibiza is working on a realignment of its tourism model. The Balearic island aims to further develop its tourist offerings, focusing more on sustainability, quality, and the quality of life for its residents. A new tourism strategy is to be developed by February 2027.
New Tourism Strategy by 2027
The Island Council of Ibiza has initiated a participation process to further develop the island's tourist positioning. Representatives from the tourism industry, as well as the local population, are to be involved. The goal is to define the long-term development of the destination and to evolve Ibiza into a high-quality and more sustainable travel destination.
However, there is no talk of a complete departure from the existing nightlife. Clubs and entertainment remain part of the island's tourist offerings. At the same time, the impacts of mass tourism are to be considered more thoroughly, and the range of offerings expanded.
Stricter Controls Against Illegal Tourism
In parallel with the strategic realignment, authorities are cracking down on illegal tourist offerings. The Island Council announced in April 2026 that more than 700 listings for illegal tourist accommodation have been removed from online platforms since the beginning of the year. Additionally, over 260 sanction procedures have been initiated.
Authorities particularly aim to intensify controls on holiday accommodations online. This is intended to prevent unapproved accommodations from being offered on platforms and undermining the regular tourist infrastructure.
Less Traffic and More Sustainability
Ibiza is also focusing on stronger regulation of mobility. The Island Council is pursuing measures to limit traffic and promote public transportation, among other things. In summer 2026, restrictions for certain vehicles not registered in Ibiza were also implemented.
The island is also working on projects for more sustainable mobility, better protection of natural resources, and a more responsible approach to tourist growth. The official tourism organization highlights, among other things, the protection of coastlines and Posidonia seagrass meadows, as well as sustainable mobility initiatives.
Tourism Areas to be Modernized
Existing tourist areas are also to be upgraded. In 2026, the City of Ibiza applied to the Island Council to classify eight areas as tourist zones requiring modernization or restructuring. These include Platja d'en Bossa, ses Figueretes, Es Viver, and Dalt Vila, among others.
According to the city, this is not about expanding hotel capacities. The focus is rather on modernizing existing offerings, improving infrastructure, mobility, and accessibility, and enhancing the quality of the tourist environment.
Party Island Remains Part of Identity
At the same time, Ibiza remains one of the most internationally renowned destinations for electronic music and nightlife. The current measures therefore indicate less of a departure from party tourism and more an attempt to better manage the existing model and complement it with other tourist offerings.
The extent of this realignment is still open. The new tourism strategy is currently in development and is expected to be completed by February 2027. Only then will it become clearer what long-term changes Ibiza will decide for its tourism model.
