Mushroom foraging: an app cannot yet spot a safe dinner
Digital identification aids make the search easier. They cannot replace the decisive safety check.
One photo, one suggestion on the screen, one supposedly familiar name: digital mushroom identification can enrich a walk in the woods. It becomes dangerous when the suggestion turns into a decision about dinner. Between «this could be that species» and «this find can go into the pan» lies a difference that a pleasing app interface easily conceals.
Caution here is not a blanket rejection of technology. Even the Swiss Pilzen app states in its description, updated in September 2026, that it does not grant permission to eat a find. Such a limitation is the decisive part of the product information, even if the identification function draws more attention in use.
The check belongs in the outing plan
The Swiss Association of Official Mushroom Inspection Bodies (VAPKO) recommends submitting collected finds to an expert inspection. For a weekend outing, that means opening hours and the location of an inspection point should be clarified before setting off. A basket full in the evening is of little help if the responsible office has already closed and the planned meal depends on an unchecked identification.
An inspection requires the actual find. A single photo does not automatically show all the features needed for identification. Nor does the reliability of an earlier identification carry over to the next, similar-looking mushroom. A basket can hold several species; the check must therefore cover the collected material, not just one particularly fine specimen.
According to VAPKO's foraging guidance, mushrooms should be removed carefully and transported in a way that preserves important features. Airy containers are more suitable than plastic bags. Unknown finds are kept separate. This preparation makes later examination easier and prevents damaged or mixed specimens from making the assessment even harder.

The woods have no single Swiss foraging rule
Alongside species identification there is a second check: is foraging permitted at the chosen place and on the chosen date? The rules vary by region. Zurich's fact sheet of 18 March 2026 generally allows a maximum of one kilogram per person per day; foraging is prohibited from the first to the tenth day of a month. Protected areas may mean further restrictions.
These Zurich details are not a permit valid across Switzerland. Anyone choosing a different region for Saturday must check its rules. The fact that 19 September falls outside Zurich's closed season answers neither the question about a specific protected area nor the question about rules beyond the cantonal border. Spontaneous outings in particular tempt people to overlook such differences.
Three deceptive certainties
Tox Info Suisse describes widespread misconceptions about mushrooms. That animals have eaten from a mushroom does not make it edible for humans. Nor is an unremarkable taste a reliable safety test. And cooking is not a universal method for making a poisonous find harmless. Such rules of thumb sound convincing because they tie into everyday experience; they are not enough for a safe assessment.
Time lag is another factor. Symptoms can appear only hours or even days after a meal. A quiet evening at first therefore does not prove the mushrooms were harmless. Conversely, stomach trouble alone cannot diagnose a specific poisoning. What matters is explicitly mentioning the connection during medical assessment.
If a suspicion arises after the meal
If poisoning is suspected, Tox Info Suisse can be reached on 145. Mushroom and food leftovers can be important for the assessment and should be kept. Do not induce vomiting. In case of unconsciousness or other acutely life-threatening conditions, the emergency service is responsible on 144. These are emergency instructions, not guidance for self-diagnosis.
The most pleasant consequence for Saturday is also the simplest: not every find has to become dinner. Observing, photographing and learning are already a gain. Anyone who wants to eat should plan the expert inspection as a fixed part of the outing. The app can open a question. It must not invisibly take over responsibility for a safe meal.
