SWISS drops to 19th: what the Skytrax ranking means for Zurich

SWISS loses eight places in the Skytrax ranking. The list measures passenger perceptions over a year – but for a flight from Zurich, more counts than the global overall score.

SWISS has fallen from 11th to 19th in the new Skytrax ranking of the world’s best airlines. For travellers departing from Zurich, the figure hints at the brand’s international image – but it is no reliable prediction for any individual flight.

The ranking at a glance

Skytrax puts Singapore Airlines at the top for 2026, ahead of Qatar Airways and Cathay Pacific. Lufthansa ranks 14th worldwide and SWISS 19th. In the European comparison, Turkish Airlines leads ahead of Air France and Lufthansa; SWISS follows in sixth place.

The comparison with the previous year explains the attention: SWISS was ranked 11th in 2025, Lufthansa 15th. Lufthansa therefore improves slightly, while SWISS loses eight places. That is a shift in a passenger survey, not an official quality verdict, and not evidence that every route has become worse.

What Skytrax actually measures

According to Skytrax, the World Airline Awards are based on voluntary passenger input. The survey for the 2026 edition ran from September 2025 to August 2026 and covered more than 300 airlines and participants from over 100 nationalities. It asks about many points along the journey, such as booking, check-in, baggage, boarding, seat comfort, cleanliness, onboard service and entertainment.

Skytrax weights the data by passenger numbers so that airlines of different sizes become more comparable. Even so, the result remains an aggregated measure of customer satisfaction. It reflects perceptions across the entire network and over a long period. Delay data for a specific route, the condition of a single aircraft or how operations went on one particular travel day cannot be derived from it.

The Swiss view: sixth place in Europe

For passengers departing from Zurich, the European comparison is often closer to reality than the global top spot. There, SWISS sits behind Turkish Airlines, Air France, Lufthansa, Iberia and Virgin Atlantic. In western Europe it is listed as the fourth airline – behind Air France, Lufthansa and Virgin Atlantic.

That means the Swiss airline remains visible in its region, but in this year’s passenger verdict it is no longer among the world’s leading ten. The top of the table in 2026 is shaped above all by Asian and Middle Eastern carriers. Anyone comparing options between Zurich and the major hubs should therefore look beyond the overall placement and take into account their own travel class, destination, transfer times and the connections on offer.

Lufthansa still wins one individual category

Differentiation by category matters. At the same awards, Lufthansa took first place for first-class dining on board. That shows why an overall ranking captures only part of the picture: an airline can be rated very highly in one product area and still end up outside the global top group on aggregate.

SWISS also points to product investments. In April, the airline received awards at other industry prizes for its cabin concept and individual service offerings. Those are, however, different procedures and different juries; they cannot be directly equated with a Skytrax passenger survey.

What travellers can take from this

The new ranking works as a guide, not as a booking machine. For a trip from Zurich it is worth looking at the actual connection: direct flight or transfer, transfer time, fare conditions, seat type, baggage rules and reliability on the route you want. On long-haul routes the aircraft type can also be decisive, because cabins differ within a single airline.

SWISS’s decline is therefore a relevant reputational signal, but not a blanket assessment of every trip. The more useful question is not whether 19th place is “bad”. What matters is what service is offered on the specific flight you book, and at what price.

The development warrants watching

That SWISS has slipped in the overall ranking compared with the previous year is nevertheless more than a footnote for the brand. In a market where airline experiences are compared instantly online, such surveys shape the expectations of business and leisure travellers. The survey does not answer which individual measure was decisive. No serious causal explanation could be derived from it. But it does show that the aggregate perception of respondents in the 2025/2026 period was weaker than that of several direct European competitors.

For SWISS and for Zurich as an airport location, the demanding task therefore remains to make the product promise, ground processes and cabin experience consistently tangible across the entire network. These are precisely the points that feed into the Skytrax assessment.
