Premium Reductions: Deadline Ends October 31
Applications Still Possible for Low-Income Households

Insured individuals with low incomes in Switzerland can apply for premium reductions. The Confederation and cantons contribute to health insurance costs. Those who have not yet applied should do so soon: deadlines for the coming year vary by canton. It is advisable to inquire about the exact dates with the competent cantonal authority.
Who is eligible for premium reductions?
Eligibility depends on income and assets. Regulations vary by canton. Generally, individuals with low incomes, families, and social welfare recipients receive a contribution towards their health insurance premiums. Households with average incomes may also receive partial compensation if premiums pose an excessive burden.
The amount of the reduction depends on the premium level, household size, and income. In some cantons, the premium may be fully covered. Each canton publishes specific thresholds on its website. The Federal Office of Public Health (BAG) lists the responsible authorities. Further information is available in our guide to health insurance premiums.
What documents are required?
For the application, you need the official cantonal form. This is accompanied by proof of income and assets, such as tax assessments or salary statements. Current health insurance premium invoices must also be submitted. Some cantons additionally request information on rent or maintenance obligations.
It is advisable to gather the documents early. A checklist can help ensure nothing is forgotten. If you miss the deadline, you cannot receive the reduction for the current application year. A late application is usually not considered.
Where and how to apply?
Applications are submitted to the competent cantonal authority. Many cantons offer an online form; alternatively, a written application is possible. The BAG refers to cantonal websites where forms can be downloaded. Cantonal advice centers can assist with questions.
After review, insured individuals receive a decision. Payment is usually made directly to the health insurance company, which reduces the premium. The reduction is valid for one year and must be re-applied for. Changes in income or a move to another canton require a new application.
Missing the deadline does not automatically mean bad luck: in hardship cases, a late application may be accepted. This requires a justified request. However, this option is not automatic and should be clarified early. Early contact with the cantonal authority is therefore worthwhile.
