VW steering recall: What owners in Switzerland need to know

A screw exposed to corrosion can, in extreme cases, impair the steering. Around 2.86 million VW and Audi vehicles are covered worldwide; the Swiss figure is still open.

Volkswagen and Audi are checking around 2.86 million vehicles worldwide because of a possible weak point in the mounting of the steering gear. In the worst case, a corroded screw can break and impair the steering. For owners in Switzerland, however, what matters is what the large number does not say: whether their own car is affected can only be clarified via the vehicle identification number and the official recall process.

A single screw is the starting point

According to the published recall information, moisture can reach a mounting screw that fixes the steering gear to the subframe. Corrosion can weaken the screw over a longer period. If it breaks, the steering gear can move; in extreme cases, steerability is limited.

The recall is therefore safety-relevant, but it is not a report of millions of steering systems that have already failed. According to the available information, Volkswagen stated that no accidents or injuries are known to have resulted from the described defect. The measure is intended to eliminate the risk before it materialises in road traffic.

Which vehicles are named

According to media reports, the German Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt documentation covers around 2.16 million vehicles of the Volkswagen brand and about 700,000 Audi vehicles. Named among others are certain production periods of the Tiguan, Touran, Golf, Golf Variant, Golf Sportsvan and Caddy, as well as the Audi Q3. Depending on the model, production runs roughly from 2013 to 2024.

Such model lists are an indication, but not a reliable self-test. The model line, market, production date and the part installed can differ. Recalls in Canada or the United States also have a narrower scope in some cases than the European action. Anyone comparing only brand and model year may therefore wrongly include or exclude their own vehicle.

Swiss scope not yet quantified

No publicly confirmed total for Switzerland was available at the editorial deadline. That does not mean Swiss vehicles are excluded. In international safety actions, manufacturers and importers match the chassis numbers and contact the registered owners as soon as the national list is finalised.

In the event of recalls, AMAG recommends waiting for an official notification or having the chassis number checked through the designated manufacturer and dealer channels. The 17-digit number appears in the vehicle registration document and on the vehicle itself. Personal data should not be entered on arbitrary recall websites.

The repair should be manageable

According to the information published so far, the affected mounting screw is replaced in the workshop and the area is inspected. The intervention is expected to take less than an hour and to be free of charge as part of the recall. The actual time required depends on the appointment, the condition of the vehicle and the workshop's schedule.

A recall is not the same as a general withdrawal from service of all the models named. Without an explicit instruction from the manufacturer or an authority, no blanket driving ban can be derived from the announcement. Changes in steering feel, unusual play or noises should nevertheless be professionally assessed without delay; they do not prove the recall defect, but they can be safety-relevant.

What owners can do now

First, it is worth checking the official recall information from the manufacturer and the Swiss importer. Second, the chassis number should be at hand. Third, if an invitation arrives, a workshop appointment should be arranged promptly. Vehicles already sold privately are an additional reason to keep contact details and changes of ownership correct.

Anyone planning to buy a used car can have it confirmed that outstanding recall work has been completed. A workshop invoice does not necessarily replace a query in the manufacturer's system, because recall measures are documented per vehicle.

A big number still needs an individual check

The global dimension makes the case expensive and organisationally demanding for Volkswagen. For individual owners, however, it is not the headline about millions of vehicles that decides matters, but the unambiguous allocation of their own car. Until the Swiss scope is known, neither the all-clear nor alarmism is appropriate.

The proper step is simple: use official channels, check the chassis number and do not postpone an ordered repair. That turns a possible steering risk into a manageable workshop job.
