The two Swiss health platforms Compassana and Well are merging. The responsible parties announced this in a joint statement. The goal is a unified digital solution for managing patient data. This could change things for insured individuals, doctor's offices, and hospitals. The announcement comes at a time when the electronic patient record still faces low acceptance in Switzerland. Both platforms aim to build more trust and simplify usage by combining their strengths.

Compassana was developed in connection with the electronic patient record (EPR). The platform is used in several cantons and supported by numerous hospitals. Well is another digital health application aimed at a broad public. Both pursue similar goals: health data should be secure yet easily accessible. Until now, the systems have largely operated separately. This is now set to change. The merger offers the opportunity to combine the strengths of both platforms and eliminate redundancies.

What the Merger Aims to Achieve

The combination of forces aims to simplify the digital exchange of patient data. In the future, patients could access their health data via a single platform. Hospitals and doctor's offices would also benefit from standardized interfaces. Those responsible expect fewer administrative hurdles and more efficient treatment. For users, this primarily means more convenience: one login, one overview, all relevant data. In addition, data could be exchanged more effectively between different service providers if needed.

However, the technical integration is challenging. The data inventories of both platforms are organized differently. A smooth migration is central to avoid interruptions. The companies announce a gradual integration. The companies announced a gradual integration. Already with the merger announcement in May 2022, it was revealed that the joint platform is named Compassana and operated by Compassana AG. Further technical integration is an ongoing process, with specific timelines being continuously adjusted. Users will be informed about changes early on.

Consequences for Hospitals and Health Insurers

Hospitals currently work with various digital tools. A common platform could make findings, lab results, and X-ray images centrally available. This saves time and reduces errors. Health insurers could also benefit from standardized data, for instance, when billing for treatments. Health insurance companies have advocated for the harmonization of health data for years. A unified database could also facilitate research without violating privacy.

However, cantonal health laws must be observed. The cantons are responsible for hospital financing and healthcare provision. A nationwide platform must be compatible with federal structures. The Federal Office of Public Health will monitor the development. The competition authority could also examine the project if market concentration occurs. The companies emphasize their willingness to cooperate openly with supervisory authorities.

Data Protection as a Central Issue

The more centrally health data is stored, the greater the risk of misuse. The operators emphasize that security standards would be enhanced. The Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner will likely scrutinize the project. Swiss data protection law sets high requirements for processing patient data. Platform operators must demonstrate that data is protected against unauthorized access. This is the only way to gain public trust.

For users, nothing changes for now. Existing offerings remain and will be gradually merged. Further information is expected in the coming months. Digitalization in healthcare remains a dynamic field. The merger is another step, but likely not the last. It remains to be seen how the market develops and if other platforms will join.
