Kanye West and Russia: Planned Concerts in St. Petersburg Cause Controversy
US rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, was scheduled to perform two concerts in St. Petersburg in October. However, it is now unclear whether the performances can take place at all. The operators of the Gazprom Arena stated that the concerts announced for October 10 and 11 could not be held there. According to the stadium, no rental agreement was signed with the organizer.
The organizer Say Agency contradicts this statement. The agency maintains the two concert dates, explaining that the necessary contracts were yet to be finalized. This leaves the performance in limbo just weeks before the scheduled date.
Stadium Withdraws Commitment
The concerts were announced on August 17. Initially, the Gazprom Arena itself was named as the venue and promoted the performances. Shortly thereafter, the stadium changed its position, stating that it had not concluded a rental agreement with Say Agency. Promotional materials for the concerts were removed from the arena's website.
Say Agency, however, disputes this. Managing Director Anna Subcheva stated that the concerts were not cancelled. According to the agency, contractual issues still needed to be clarified. This leaves two contradictory accounts currently standing.
Speculation also surrounds the background in Russia. The independent Russian medium Fontanka reported, citing sources, that the stadium's decision followed a call from Moscow. However, there is no official confirmation of political interference from the Kremlin. This account should therefore not be treated as fact.
Tickets Were Already on Sale
The organizers had already started advance sales. According to several media reports, prices ranged from 9,000 to 160,000 Rubles. The cheapest categories sold out quickly. The exact number of tickets sold is currently not reliably known.
The scale of the planned concerts is nevertheless considerable. The Gazprom Arena can accommodate around 80,000 people. Two sold-out evenings would thus theoretically allow for over 160,000 spectators.
Following the arena's withdrawal, Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium has since stated its general openness to a performance by Ye. Whether this indication could lead to an actual relocation remains to be seen.
An Unusual Performance in Russia
Should Ye indeed perform in Russia, it would be a remarkable event. Since the start of Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine, many Western musicians have withdrawn from the Russian concert market.
Ye would be one of the most internationally renowned Western artists to perform in Russia since the war began. The rapper was in Moscow in 2024, but for a private event. He did not give a concert during that visit.
The artist is now highly controversial internationally. In recent years, Ye has repeatedly made antisemitic statements and publicly praised Adolf Hitler. Due to these controversies, several planned performances in Europe were cancelled or prevented in 2026.
A Concert Was Also Cancelled in Switzerland
The controversy has a direct link to Switzerland. FC Basel cancelled a planned performance by Ye at St. Jakob-Park in April. The club told Reuters that, after a review, they decided not to offer a platform to the artist under these circumstances.
In other European countries, cancellations or issues with planned concerts also occurred in 2026. The UK denied Ye entry for a festival appearance, while planned shows in Poland and France, among others, also met resistance.
Russia Reacts Contradictorily
Precisely for this reason, the planned Russia tour is politically and culturally remarkable. On the one hand, Russia has increasingly presented itself as an alternative model to the West since the start of the war, criticizing Western culture and societal values. On the other hand, the Russian concert market continues to offer a stage for international artists.
The Ye case makes this contradiction particularly visible. The rapper is highly controversial even in the West due to his antisemitic and Nazi-era statements. At the same time, he is one of the world's most famous musicians.
For this reason, there were also critical voices in Russia. Individual politicians, for example, demanded that Ye play Russian music during his performance. Others questioned his earlier statements about Hitler and Nazi symbolism.
Will the Concert Actually Take Place?
The unresolved contractual situation is currently crucial. The Gazprom Arena states that no rental agreement exists and therefore the concerts cannot take place there. Say Agency, however, contradicts this and continues to announce the two dates on October 10 and 11.
The alleged political interference from Moscow has also not been confirmed so far. It is only certain that the arena changed its original communication and removed the events from its website.
Thus, while Ye is currently still announced for two October dates in St. Petersburg, whether he will actually perform there remains uncertain.
A Concert with Political Significance
The case demonstrates how closely pop culture and politics are now intertwined in Russia. An appearance by an internationally renowned US artist would not just be a musical event. It could also be interpreted as a sign that Russia, despite international isolation, remains open to major Western artists.
For Ye, in turn, Russia would be an unusual place for a restart on the big stage. While several European organizers rejected his performances due to his past statements, his name generates significant interest in Russia.
However, nothing has been decided yet. As long as the question of the venue and the rental agreement remains unresolved, the two concerts announced for October remain questionable.
