Norway has a new king. Following the death of Harald V., his son Haakon VIII. ascended the throne on Friday. The 53-year-old leads the monarchy into a new phase. He uses the same motto as his father: «Alt for Norge», «All for Norway». A difficult period simultaneously begins for the Norwegian royal family.

King Harald V. died on Friday, August 28, 2026, at 6:35 AM at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet. He was 89 years old. Harald had represented Norway as King since 1991. He had received treatment for health issues repeatedly in recent years. The government declared a national mourning period until after the funeral. The funeral will take place in Oslo Cathedral; a date is not yet set. Norwegian Government

Haakon VIII. Takes the Throne

The Norwegian throne automatically passes to the next heir upon the monarch's death. Haakon, born on July 20, 1973, has thus become King Haakon VIII. The transition was formally confirmed at an extraordinary meeting of the Council of State at the Royal Palace.

The new King chose the same motto as his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather: «Alt for Norge». Haakon also pledged to perform his new duty in the service of Norway and according to the constitution. The Norwegian government described the change as the beginning of a new era. Haakon is prepared for the task. He attended the Norwegian Naval Academy. He also studied political science and development studies, among other subjects. During his father's reign, he repeatedly assumed representative duties. He served temporarily as regent when Harald's health was poor or he was abroad. Royal Court of Norway

Crown Princess Becomes Queen

Roles also change immediately within the immediate family. Haakon's wife Mette-Marit is now Queen. Their daughter Ingrid Alexandra holds the title of Crown Princess. She is second in line to the throne. Her younger brother Sverre Magnus follows in third place. Royal Court of Norway

The Norwegian line of succession follows a direct lineage. Since a constitutional amendment in 1990, male and female descendants generally have equal rights. However, the former regulation still applies to those born before 1990. Therefore, Haakon remained the first heir to the throne despite his younger sister Märtha Louise.

Ingrid Alexandra is 22 years old. She has been prepared for her future role since childhood. With Haakon's ascension to the throne, she becomes Crown Princess. The Norwegian government points out that, as the second person in the line of succession, she must take a written oath to the Constitution before the Storting for the first time in recent Norwegian history after a change of throne. A New Role for Mette-Marit

The change of throne comes at a difficult time for Mette-Marit. The new Queen suffers from a severe chronic lung disease. In June 2026, she was placed on the Norwegian waiting list for a lung transplant after extensive examinations. According to the Royal Court, her illness also affects the official duties of Haakon and the other family members. Royal Court of Norway

Haakon thus faces not only the task of continuing his father's legacy. He must also manage the burdens within his own family.

Harald Leaves a Special Legacy

Harald V. shaped Norway for more than three decades. He became King in 1991 after his father, Olav V., died. Together with Queen Sonja, he represented a relatively popular monarchy.

Harald was marked by World War II even as a child. After the German occupation of Norway, the royal family fled abroad. Young Harald spent part of his childhood in the USA. He returned to Norway after the war.

The country changed significantly during his reign. Norway became one of Europe's most prosperous states. Society simultaneously transformed and became more diverse. Harald strove to position the monarchy as a unifying element.

His reaction to the terrorist attacks of July 22, 2011, is especially remembered. He publicly supported Norway's open and diverse society. He also sought direct contact with the population during natural disasters and national crises.

How Much Support Does the Monarchy Still Have?

The central question for Haakon is therefore not whether he can fulfill the King's constitutional duties. This is largely regulated. The more difficult question is how the monarchy will assert itself in the long term.

Harald was an exceptionally well-known and popular figure for decades. His death therefore leaves a void. Simultaneously, trust in the royal family was recently strained by several controversies. These include legal issues surrounding Marius Borg Høiby, Mette-Marit's son from a previous relationship, and the debate about Mette-Marit's contacts with Jeffrey Epstein. Haakon himself is considered relatively unburdened. He continues to enjoy a high degree of personal trust. SRF

The new King will therefore need to maintain closeness to the population. He must do so without abandoning the monarchy's traditional role. He possesses only very limited political power. Norway is a constitutional monarchy; political responsibility rests with the government and parliament.

An Automatic Succession – But Not Automatic Success

The transition from Harald to Haakon is clearly regulated by constitutional law. The country remains capable of acting. The state never has no monarch. Haakon immediately became King upon his father's death. Government of Norway

Nevertheless, a new phase begins politically and socially. Harald V. embodied the Norwegian monarchy since 1991. Haakon must now show whether he can continue this legacy under changed conditions.

For Norway, the change of throne is therefore more than a formal act. With Harald, a defining figure of the country departs. Haakon VIII. takes over, representing a new generation. He has a clear mandate but no guarantee that his predecessor's popularity will automatically transfer to him.
