Zuchwil: 250,000 Tons of Waste Become Electricity and Heat

600 Million Franc Project Transforms Regional Energy Supply

A modern waste incineration plant is currently under construction in Zuchwil, Solothurn. The project, with planned investment costs of approximately 600 million Swiss francs, is set to process 250,000 tons of waste annually from its commissioning in 2028, producing both electrical energy and district heating for the region. The plant replaces existing, partly outdated incineration capacities in the region.

Modern Technology for Maximum Energy Yield

The new plant utilizes state-of-the-art incineration technology to extract the maximum possible energy from the delivered waste. The heat generated during combustion is converted into electricity and district heating. Kehrichtverwertung Region Solothurn AG (KVASO) states that the plant will cover about 35 percent of the canton of Solothurn's electricity demand and supply over 15,000 households with district heating in the future.

The waste incineration plant meets the latest environmental standards and features highly modern flue gas cleaning. Pollutants are filtered before the exhaust gases enter the atmosphere. The plant is expected to contribute to improving the regional CO2 balance by replacing fossil fuels with energy from waste.

Significance for Regional Energy Supply

For the Solothurn region, the project represents an important step towards energy autonomy. Thermal waste recovery is an established component of the energy supply in Switzerland. While other renewable energies like solar and wind power are weather-dependent, waste incineration plants provide continuous baseload power.

The new plant in Zuchwil will process waste from several cantons. Thus, it plays a central role in the regional waste disposal infrastructure. Experts emphasize that Switzerland relies on thermal waste recovery due to its high population density and limited landfill capacities.

Contribution to the Energy Transition

The project fits into the national strategy for the energy transition. The federal government promotes the use of domestic energy sources to reduce dependence on energy imports. Waste incineration plants make a measurable contribution: nationwide, they already cover about 5 percent of electricity demand.

Construction work in Zuchwil is proceeding as planned. Commissioning is scheduled for 2028. The plant will then not only dispose of waste but also make a significant contribution to regional energy and heat supply. The 600 million Swiss franc investment underscores the importance of thermal waste recovery in Swiss energy policy.

For the operators, the project is a commitment to a sustainable and resource-efficient circular economy. The plant is expected to supply energy for decades, thereby supporting the region in achieving its climate goals.
