Earthships: Self-Sufficient Homes from Recycled Materials in the Netherlands

In the Netherlands, Earthships are increasingly being built – self-sufficient homes constructed entirely from recycled materials. These buildings use old car tyres as structural elements, glass bottles as infill, and cans for wall construction. They generate their own electricity with solar panels, collect rainwater for household use, and produce food in integrated greenhouses.

Origin and Spread in Europe
The concept was developed in the 1970s by American architect Michael Reynolds. Reynolds built the first Earthships in the New Mexico desert. There are now over 3,000 such buildings worldwide. In Europe, Earthships are primarily found in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The Dutch municipality of Olst-Wijhe completed the country's first fully approved Earthship in 2017.
The construction follows six basic principles: thermal mass for temperature regulation, natural and renewable energies, water harvesting and treatment, wastewater management, natural building materials, and food production. An average Earthship costs between 150,000 and 400,000 Euros, depending on size and features.
Challenges in the Alpine Region
For Switzerland, the question of transferability arises. Climatic conditions in the Alpine region differ significantly from those in the Netherlands or New Mexico. Winter temperatures below zero degrees and fewer hours of sunshine require additional insulation measures. Additionally, Swiss building regulations are stricter than in many other countries.
The Federal Office of Energy (BFE) considers the principle of energy self-sufficiency and sustainable construction suitable for Switzerland's sustainability strategy. However, the designs would need adaptation to local conditions. The use of recycled materials, in particular, could face legal hurdles, as these must meet Swiss fire protection and structural integrity requirements.
Potential for Alternative Living
Proponents see Earthships as a solution to rising energy costs and resource scarcity. The buildings incur minimal running costs and significantly reduce the ecological footprint. In the Netherlands, these homes are primarily chosen by individuals seeking independence from conventional infrastructures.
Critics point to the complex construction method. Building an Earthship requires specialized knowledge and significant manual labor. The thermal mass made from rammed earth tires makes the construction labor-intensive. Furthermore, questions regarding longevity and maintenance remain open.
Whether the concept gains traction in Switzerland depends on several factors: the willingness of authorities to approve alternative building forms, adaptation to alpine climatic conditions, and the availability of qualified construction companies. Initial interest groups in Switzerland are already examining the feasibility of pilot projects.
