Golden Algae in Poland: Over Four Tons of Dead Fish Recovered

Toxic Algae Spreads, Threatening Ecosystems. The Incident Recalls the 2022 Oder River Disaster.

Over four tons of dead fish have been recovered from Polish waters in recent days. Authorities suspect toxic golden algae as the cause. The algae has apparently spread in several rivers and lakes. This fish kill recalls the Oder River disaster in summer 2022. Local authorities have taken water samples as a precautionary measure to determine the extent.

Golden algae, scientifically known as Prymnesium parvum, is a single-celled organism that produces the toxin prymnesin under certain conditions. This toxin damages the gills of fish, leading to their death. Even low concentrations can destroy large fish populations; mussels and snails are also affected. The algae's natural habitat is brackish water. In freshwater rivers, it finds ideal conditions when salinity, temperature, and nutrient levels rise.

Golden Algae and its Conditions

Experts identify three factors favoring mass proliferation: high water temperature, low water levels, and excessive salt input. Industry, mining, and agriculture contribute significantly to this. In the Oder River during the 2022 disaster, salt loads were measured well above permissible levels. Temperatures were also exceptionally high. This combination led to one of the largest documented algal blooms in a European river.

A joint report by German and Polish scientists identified golden algae as the main cause. Axel Vogel, the then Brandenburg Environment Minister, called the event «an ecological catastrophe». An estimated 360 tons of fish died in the Oder River. Fish populations have not fully recovered to this day.

The 2022 Oder River Disaster as a Warning

The Oder River disaster also highlighted weaknesses in cross-border crisis management. Poland only belatedly informed Germany about the extent of the situation. The EU demanded improvements in water quality. To this day, the stress factor of salt has not been eliminated. German environmental experts criticize Poland for not complying with the requirements of the Water Framework Directive. The Polish government, however, points to the economic importance of mining.

Now, much indicates a similar scenario is repeating. «Golden algae is a warning signal for the condition of our waters,» says Christian Wolter from the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries. The Polish authorities have deployed a task force. Initial measurements show high algae concentrations at some stations. Precautionary measures, such as fishing bans, are being reviewed in affected areas. Official confirmation of the extent is pending.

Consequences for the Ecosystem

Golden algae can destabilize an entire ecosystem. When the algae die, they sink to the bottom and are decomposed by bacteria. This process consumes oxygen. Dead zones emerge where little life is possible. This impacts the entire food chain – from plankton to waterfowl. Rare species are also affected.

Economically, the damages are significant. Fisheries lose their livelihood, and tourism suffers. Swimming bans could further impact the region. Drinking water supplies are also at risk. Water treatment becomes more complex if algal toxins are detected. Municipalities along the rivers fear high costs.

Environmental organizations therefore demand decisive action from the governments in Warsaw and Berlin. Binding limit values for salt discharges, improved wastewater treatment plants, and the renaturation of riverbanks are necessary. A joint early warning system should detect future algal blooms promptly. Only with improved water quality can the golden algae be prevented from repeatedly becoming a threat.
