South Korea Boosts Chip Industry with Intensive Training
Cram Schools Address Semiconductor Industry Skill Shortage

South Korea is responding to the skilled labor shortage in the semiconductor industry with a new training model. Special intensive courses, modeled after the "cram schools" common in South Korea, aim to train qualified workers for chip production within a few months. The programs target career changers and university graduates.
The South Korean government and leading chip manufacturers like Samsung and SK Hynix jointly developed this initiative. The goal is to address the severe shortage of skilled personnel in an industry vital to the South Korean economy. The semiconductor industry accounts for about one-fifth of South Korea's exports.
Compressed Training Programs
The intensive courses last between three and six months. They focus on practical skills in chip manufacturing. Unlike traditional academic programs, they emphasize compressed knowledge and direct application. Participants learn processes such as lithography, etching techniques, and quality control.
Industry representatives estimate the need for tens of thousands of additional skilled workers in the coming years. Global competition for semiconductor expertise is intensifying. At the same time, demand for chips for artificial intelligence, electromobility, and 5G technology is rising.
Swiss Technology Sector Under Pressure
Switzerland also faces an increasing shortage of skilled workers in the technology sector, but in different segments. According to the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), technical professions are among those in demand. Software development, cybersecurity, and engineering are particularly affected.
Swiss companies traditionally rely on dual vocational training and university education. Intensive programs modeled after the South Korean approach are currently rare. While private providers offer coding bootcamps, a state-coordinated initiative for specialized technology areas is lacking.
Criticism of Rapid Qualification
Experts warn against superficial training from short-term programs. Complex semiconductor production requires deep understanding and experience. This cannot be imparted in just a few months. Critics fear a two-tier workforce consisting of classically trained engineers and rapidly qualified workers.
Proponents argue that these programs specifically fill operational roles. They do not compete with engineering education. They see this as a pragmatic response to acute staffing needs. The long-term impact of the South Korean initiative will become apparent in the coming years.
For Switzerland, the question arises whether similar models would be beneficial for specific technology sectors. Given the international competition for skilled workers, flexible training formats could gain importance.
